For years I’ve heard that there’s lots of positive change happening in Harlem. My visit was sparked by learning about the Harlem Art Crawl and a desire to go to the iconic Sylvia’s.
Sylvia’ Restaurant
Sylvia's is the only original Harlem soul food restaurant still in business. Despite its large size, Sylvia’s is warm, cozy and full of hospitality.
My table faced where the food was arriving from the kitchen. I saw what was ordered and saw how briskly the wait staff got the piping hot dishes to patrons.
I chose a lunch of catfish, collard greens and peas with rice. The meal and the service were very good.
I think it would be fun to experience lunch from the counter service and this is now on my bucket list.
Harlem Art Crawl
The Art Crawl tour took us to exhibits that celebrated the 40th year Anniversary of “For Colored Girls Where the Rainbow is Enuf...” by Ntozake Shange. This is a choreopoem about seven women told through poetry, drama, music, and dance. The focus is on personal struggle and celebration.
We visited a store front gallery, a gallery in a brownstone and a beautiful exhibition space at the Public Library. The art commentary was terrific as was the narrative in-between that covered historical highlights, architectural highlights and a glimpse into this beautiful neighborhood.
The artwork was innovative. Some of the pieces surprised me and others delighted me. They were all thought provoking. We met some of the artists who chatted about their creative processes.
On this tour, you felt the passion, the dedication and most importantly the uniqueness of each artist. The Harlem Art Crawl made experiencing Harlem personable, intimate and magical. This tour gifts each participant unique perspectives beyond art.
It was a great day that left me wanting to learn more.
